Over the years many tools have been developed to assess the transverse and sagittal plane abnormalities in hallux valgus deformity, however the coronal plane evaluation of the deformity has been problematic and led to disagreements about the movements of the bones of the medial column. In the past 10 years, weightbearing CT scan has been utilized to markedly increase our knowledge about the coronal plane movements of the medial column of the foot that produces hallux valgus. This lecture will review important papers on the subject and explain the various evaluation tools that will become more important in the future to document the severity of the deformity and develop surgical approaches that pinpoint the etiology of the deformity.
